Congratulations ISEF Participant Nicholas Moore 2023
Freshman Student selected to attend ISEF 2023
The Center for STEM Education facilitates the annual ISEF-affiliated Science and Engineering Fair at UNC Charlotte. At the February, 2, 2023 event, Nicholas Moore, a freshman at South Iredell High School, was selected to attend the International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Dallas, Texas, May 14-19, 2023. Nicholas started his project after he learned about the role of greenhouse gas emissions in global warming during a lecture in his Earth and Environmental science class. Specifically, Nicholas learned that methane might contribute more significantly to greenhouse gas emissions than carbon dioxide. He was very concerned because rising sea levels may flood coastal areas and combined with extreme and persistent catastrophic weather events, scientists, engineers, business leaders and elected officials will need to define strategies and measures to combat the costly effects of global warming trends. Nicholas decided to investigate how future methane and carbon dioxide concentrations can affect warming around the globe. He researched NASA and NOAA data to learn how greenhouse gasses trap heat inside earth’s atmosphere and engineered and built chambers that would trap and measure atmospheric gases. Nicholas participated at ISEF in Dallas in May along with over 2000 other high school students from across the world.
