Description:
Embark on an exhilarating journey into the realm of biology with our intensive week-long summer program! Designed in alignment with the Biology I North Carolina Core Standards for the initial six weeks of the course, this program offers a dynamic blend of classroom instruction, hands-on experiments, and interactive activities to deepen your understanding of fundamental biological concepts.
Schedule:
Day 1: Introduction to Cells and Microscopy
- Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Dive into the fascinating world of cells, their structure, and functions through engaging lectures and visual aids.
- Lab Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Get hands-on experience with microscopy techniques, observing various types of cells and their organelles under the microscope.
Day 2: Genetics and Heredity
- Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Explore the principles of genetics, inheritance patterns, and the role of DNA through interactive discussions.
- Lab Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Conduct experiments on genetic traits using Punnett squares and genetic simulations to understand hereditary concepts.
Day 3: Evolutionary Biology
- Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Delve into the mechanisms of evolution, natural selection, and adaptation through engaging presentations and group activities.
- Lab Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Explore evolutionary concepts through hands-on experiments, fossil studies, and comparative anatomy.
Day 4: Ecology and Ecosystems
- Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Learn about ecosystems, food webs, and the interdependence of organisms within their environments.
- Lab Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Conduct field experiments, biodiversity surveys, and ecological simulations to understand the dynamics of ecosystems.
Day 5: Culminating Projects and Presentations
- Morning Session (9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.): Work on culminating projects integrating concepts learned throughout the week.
- Presentation Session (10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.): Showcase your projects to peers and instructors, reflecting on your learning journey and discoveries.
Join us for a stimulating week of exploration, discovery, and scientific inquiry as we unravel the mysteries of biology together!
